Grenna

Was the cottage talking to me, whispering confection-covered messages?

I sank into one of the squishy, molded jellybean chairs, my mind a clutter of thoughts. “People can survive for three days without food, right?”

“With water we can survive much longer,” he answered as he paced. “Someone will eventually come and look for us. Probably a search team when we don’t make it to our classes.”

It was Sunday–would they come for us tomorrow or the next day? Even if they searched, would they find this place? A headache formed and grew with each question. As much as I wanted nothing more than to enter my dorm and see Jenn’s smiling face and listen to her chatter, I also hated the school. It was the school’s fault I was even in this cottage. I sighed. If I accepted that, then I had to accept it was the school’s fault I met Mandevar.

My eyes following his movements as he paced. He stopped, picked up his Swiss army knife, flipped open the blade and cut the windows at the seams, between the sugar glass and wood frame. When it didn’t work, he went back to the door and flipped open the tiny screwdriver, twisting the hinges. When that didn’t work, he paced more.

“I’m going to get you out of here. I promise.” He rested his arms over my shoulders and kissed my head. The gesture was kind and showed he cared for me, yet it didn’t ease the tension.

I stood, his hands dropping against the backrest of the chair as I padded to the kitchen. If my saliva dissolves the window, maybe water would do the same. Filling a large pan, I carried it to the main room, attempting not to spill any as it was heavy.

I didn’t glance his way but felt his hands grab the bottom, lessening the heaviness. Together we splashed it against the window. It drizzled, spilling into the windowsill, and running down the wood-like interior wall, but left no impression on the window. I expected nothing, but was hoping at least a stream or two would dissolve the sugar glass showing me it worked, but nothing.

I dropped to the floor, tears filling my eyes. Covering my face, I quietly sobbed into my hands. The gentle scrape against the wall told me he lowered himself against the wall beside me. His arm snaked behind my neck as he pulled me into his chest. The moment was quiet as if he understood no words would soothe how I felt.

A coldness robbed the place of his warmth as he left me there. I didn’t look up, but stared at the strange bumpy wood on the floor between my knees. I soon felt his hand as it touched mine. Glancing up at him, his hazel eyes gave me hope. At least I wasn’t trapped alone.

He guided me to his carpet where he shuffled his cards. The games took my mind off the desperation of our situation enough I even felt my lips turn into a smile.
